Some outgrow allergy to tree nuts, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center experts report

“Nine percent of children allergic to almonds, pecans, cashews and other tree nuts outgrow their allergy over time, including those who’ve had a severe reaction such as anaphylaxis shock, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.”

That is a very low figure isn’t it. Just 9%.

Going in for retesting every year is the safest way of keeping up to date.

Our youngest daughter’s food allergies have subsided and she is 3 1/2 now. It is almost time to go to the next level of challenge testing. Maybe when she’s 4.

Just one or two concessions! - Not

“Once a school makes one or two concessions people might expect others, Goff said. Schools are urged to work with parents, but it can be tough.

You open a Pandora’s box for everyone wanting their special dietary needs met, be it religious, vegetarian or otherwise, he explained.

We work very hard to protect the food supply. We don’t want to harm any child, Goff continued. When you’re feeding hundreds of children every day you can’t meet every individual need.”

Exactly right. If a school bans peanuts why not milk or wheat. I believe if you do ban peanuts you are discrimanting against all the other children that need other dietary restrictions. Banning peanuts is not the way to go, it’s not a real life scenario. Vigilance and adding risk management policies is what’s required.

Parenting a Child with a Food Allergy

“We even run into situations where a child has been to the Emergency Room several times a year for exposure to certain foods. I have to wonder where the parent’s head is at in these situations. If you know your child has a life threatening food allergy, wouldn’t you do everything in your power to keep them from eating it? E.R. visits are scary. Why put your child through that several times?”

We also know of people like this, and we have a finely tuned radar now that can tell if it’s worth educating those types of what they can do to ease the childs life.

Some get and most don’t. That’s just life I guess.
