Anaphylaxis on the AIR with 99.7FM – Episode #19
It’s been so long since I’ve had time to look at getting some content up onto the blog.
Since video takes so long to produce I’ve decided to get a few podcasts out that I’ve been sitting on. I’m going to call this Episode #19.
So at last I have the recording for you that I did with Richard, Leslie and Kevin from the ToyBox radio talkback show at 99.7FM in Brisbane back in August 2008.
We cover what is anaphylaxis, possible theories as to why it’s happening, and children going to school with food allergies among other things.

enjoyed listening to the podcast.
covered a wide range of topics. often i have a list in my head before i go, but forget a chunk of it when on air!
so ,all good.
The serious aspect of anaphylaxis , linked to the more commonly seen wasp allery was good. because when anyone says allergy these days they only think ‘hayfever’ not life threatening allergy.
I like the school aspect of the conversation, there is every need to get all schools on the same page, and training. and I have to say that its a shame, because your school asthma policies are pretty good. I am part of a small charity trying to copy the your countries work in this area.
talking about your area schools will inform new parents, and give them a heads up on being firm and clear about acomadations. Its also good to name and shame a bit!!
The hygeine theory is always in the news, and it is based on a comparison of farm children and city children. so was valid point. ( although avoidance of allergies means rolling child in nasty brown stuff!)
Radio stuff causes a good ripple effect in the population, grandparents/friends /extend family, might just understand childhood allergies better.
raising awarness always is needed , esp as more and more of the highly allergic children are joining the adult workplace.
I liked the cross contamination talk with regard to trace amounts being ingested.
something that you might want to add in the future.
asthma. higher rate/good control =good outcome.
the link between asthma and anaphylaxis.
the new batch of children are not all growing out of their milk allergies , as previously generation did.
the importance of food labeling.
The difficulty going to restuarants. (restaurant staff need educating too!)
it might be
worth asking if you can do a little talk again once a year, or phone when new studies or cures are in the paper/news, as you can link your book, your site, and still raise awarness.
hope this is useful.
sarah.
Hi Aaron good to hear from you again! Well I thought you were quite informative about food allergies. It was obvious your interviewers werent very researched in the subject but unfortunately that the world we have to live in , it’s the same here in the uk,most people who arent affected by allergies know very little about the seriousness of the condition. You are doing a good job of informing them. Well done and keep up the good work.
Thank you
nathalie
Thanks Sarah, you bring up some great conversation points.
Thanks Nathalie, you are right, most people aren’t informed about Anaphylaxis so it’s up to each one of us to slowly raise awareness.
Just like 35 years ago with Asthma.
